An emperor’s secret garden

It’s fair to say that Emperor Qianlong, who ruled China for the better part of century during the Qing dynasty, holds the same fascination for Chinese as Henry VIII does among the English – a charismatic monarch who presided over a turning point in history. As such, an exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art about a secret retreat commissioned by Qianlong for his retirement has proved to be a crowd-puller. Here are my impressions in a blog for Sotheby’s.
